In a world full of competitiveness, chaos, crazy and at times cruel, some days we just need to remember Abbot and Costello. When our kid/player strikes out looking, who’s on first. When our kid/player misses a sign, what’s on second. When our kid/player walked the third batter in a row, I don’t know’s on third. If you have read this far and haven’t got a clue what I’m talking about. It would benefit you in more ways than one to go look up “Who’s on First” by Abbot and Costello after reading this and listening to the S.L.I.D.E. show of course. The skit is unmatched and will bring you to tears from laughing. Our kids need to see us laugh when it comes to the sports they love. They need to know they can fail, be confused at times, make bad plays, miss a sign and even walk batters (gasps.) Those mistakes don’t define them as players in that moment, they help define them as the future players and people they will one day be. How they learn from it, how they grow from it, it’s the take away, that matters. They’re looking to us, the parents, the coaches, the biggest voices in their ears to help them define their hard moments for the future player and person they will be. They’re looking to see if we can get past the mistakes. They’re looking to us to see if they’re allowed to get past the mistakes. And when they look at us during those “bad plays”, and we, the coaches and parents are shaking our heads, saying “who’s on first” with a smile, taking time to remember it’s just a game growing people; its then they know they can move on and just get better. – Keep getting better-Coach Mama
